Benjamin Cullis Watson, who graduated from Loughborough University in the UK, designed an odorless trash can that can quickly turn kitchen waste into compost.
This Taihi trash can can convert kitchen waste into compost for gardens and liquid fertilizer for indoor plants.
Its principle is the Bokashi composting method, which is a Japanese style composting method that uses fermentation to decompose garbage without causing decay or unpleasant odors.
This composting method produces: firstly, liquid, stored in a sealed kettle, which can be directly used to fertilize plants; The second is to collect compost separately in a container.
This trash can has a double lid and a rubber sealing ring to prevent odor from spreading, and its surface is also covered with a non stick coating for easy emptying and cleaning. Unlike many composting systems, this method does not require stirring the garbage, nor does it require specifying specific conditions or types of garbage.
The user can start fermentation by placing a special mixture of Bacillus thuringiensis in the bucket.
Kulis Watson designed the Taihi trash can while studying product design and technology in Loughborough, and was determined to use it to solve the UK's garbage problem. He spent his childhood in Ethiopia, where he said almost no garbage would be buried.
This designer purposefully designed a clean and concise shape for the trash can, emphasizing the cleanliness and simplicity of this method while also intuitively linking it with Japanese design.
Cullis Watson is currently exploring the market for Taihi trash cans and has won the 2017 Joseph Brilliantly Useful Award for New Designers Joseph. It has also completed two versions of its design.
